Abstract

Background & Methods: The aim of the study is to compare study of pulmonary function outcome amongst smokers and non-smokers at tertiary care center. The study was conducted on the selected patients in the department of Respiratory medicine, Amaltas Institute of Medical Sciences for 18 months after approval from ethics committee. Results: The mean FEV1/FVC in smokers with smoking pack years <=10 years was 53.75 ± 4.65L; in 11-20 years, it was 48.25 ± 3.54L; in 21-30 years, it was 41.80 ± 1.30L; in 31-40 years, it was 43.00 ± 2.65L; in 41-50 years, it was 40L; in 51-60 years, it was 44L; in 61-70 years, it was 41.71 ± 3.35L; in 81-90 years, it was 41.75 ± 2.87L; and in >90 years, it was 38.63 ± 3.07L. There is decrease in the mean FEV1/FVC with the increase in the smoking pack years. The comparison of mean FEV1/FVC among the smoking pack years was found to be statistically significant (P=0.001). The mean FEV1/FVC varied significantly among the smoking pack years groups.
