Patients with potentially recoverable conditions, who can benefit from more detailed observation and invasive treatment that can be provided safely in a high dependency area, are candidates for intensive care, which can be broadly defined as a service for these patients. Intensive care is typically provided in a high dependency area. Patients in the respiratory intensive care unit are a diverse population who all have severe illnesses, malfunction in numerous body systems, and multiple concurrent medical conditions.
