.Abstract
The nasopharynx and middle ear are connected via the Eustachian tube. In infants and children, it is shorter, wider, and more horizontal, which explains why they have a higher risk of otitis media. The Eustachian tube controls pressure while ventilating, shielding, and draining the middle ear. The most crucial of these three tasks is pressure regulation.
