Abstract

Background: To observe the changes in the HPA axis postoperatively in those patients who
underwent trans-sphenoidal excision of the pituitary adenomas with a normal preoperative HPA
axis. Settings and Design: 61 patients presenting with pituitary adenomas with a preoperative
normal HPA axis were chosen and were not given the routine perioperative steroid cover and
their serum cortisol levels were assessed after undergoing transsphenoidal surgery with
intraoperative preservation of the normal gland.
