Abstract

Preeclampsia (PE) is a pregnancy-specific illness characterized by new-onset
or worsening hypertension (BP>140/90 mm Hg), substantial proteinuria (> 300 mg/24 h),
and/or maternal end-organ damage after 20 weeks of gestation [1]. In low-resource countries,
hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), particularly preeclampsia, continue to be a
leading cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality [2].
