Biochemical, Cytotoxicity and Hepatoprotectives of Eichhornia crassipesagainst In vitro and In vivo studies

Abstract
The present study aims to evaluate the hepatoprotective activity of extract Eichhornia crassipeson carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced hepatoprotective in rats. The animals were daily treated with the extract ofEichhornia crassipesat a dose of 100, 200 & 400 mg/kg body weight for 21 days. Animals administrated orally with CCl4 treated with Silymarin (20mg/ Kg BW) orally for 21 days. Atthe end of the experimental period, all rats were anesthetized to collect blood for the assessment of biochemical parameters andthen sacrificed to collect the liver for weighing& analysis. Hepatotoxicity was evaluated by measuring the serum levels of aspartateaminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), bilirubin (total and direct), malondialdehyde(MDA), total protein (TP), triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol, very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL-c), low-densitylipoprotein (LDL-c), high-density lipoprotein (HDL-c), urea, creatinine, and uric acid. Based on the results obtained in this study,Eichhornia crassipesbefore exposure to the administration of CCl4 conferred favourable hepatoprotective effect inrats. It exhibits a significant hepatoprotective effect by ameliorating CCl4induced alterationsof these biochemical parameters. Hence, Eichhornia crassipescould be a potential medicinal herb that can be used in the future to preventliver intoxication.
