COMPARISON OF BLOOD PRESSURE IN SMOKELESS TOBACCO USERS AND NON TOBACCO USERS

Abstract
In previous research studies, the risk of several chronic illnesses has been evaluated by comparing cardiovascular
parameters among smokers and non-smoking or non-tobacco users. There are no sufficient explorations in the
research relating blood pressure and smokeless tobacco consumption. This study aims to compare the blood pressure
levels in chewers of Gutka (a popular form of smokeless tobacco in South Asia) with that of non-tobacco-consuming
individuals. Sixty smokeless tobacco users (gutka chewers) and sixty non-tobacco users were chosen as participants
of the study. These subjects were men aged between 18 and 35 years. After describing the nature and aim of the
research, consenting participants gave a formal consent, and a detailed history was collected from these men. After
knowing their demographics, weight, height and body mass index, their blood pressure was recorded. The results
indicated that the blood pressure of non-tobacco users is significantly better when compared to the users of smokeless
tobacco.
