Topical Antibiotic Ointment and Lateral Graft Integration in Underlay Myringoplasty: A Prospective Study.

Abstract

Objective: To compare graft outcomes and postoperative infection rates in patients undergoing myringoplasty with and without the use of topical antibiotic ointment. Study Design: Prospective randomized controlled trial. Materials and Methods: 135 patients with chronic tympanic membrane perforations were prospectively randomized to either a topical antibiotic ointment group (UAO, n=68) or a no ointment group (NAO, n=67) following underlay myringoplasty. Graft outcomes and postoperative infection rates were compared between the two groups at 6 months postoperatively.
