Abstract

The incidence and the ideal technique is not described in the literature, and no consensus has been reached regarding the ideal age of repair, operative techniques, and timing of intervention (staged or simultaneous repair). But severe degree of pectus excavatum carries a great impact on the cardiopulmonary function. Especially when it is associated with cardiac diseases that need surgical intervention. Though the timing of the repair is crucial and many described the importance to be done simultaneously at the time of cardiac surgery. It is not wise to delay the repair after developing fibrous adhesion between the heart and the sternum. Also severe pectus excavatum can compromise cardiac function in the postoperative period by compression on the heart.
