Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a heterogeneous metabolic disorder characterized by chronic hyperglycaemia resulting from insulin resistance and progressive betacell dysfunction. Mounting evidence suggests that oxidative stress, defined as an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the capacity of the antioxidant defence system, plays a central role in the initiation, progression, and complications of T2DM.
