Abstract
Background: Rat killer paste poisoning, particularly due to yellow phosphorus, is a significant public health issue. This study aims to assess the clinical manifestations of poisoning and evaluate the effectiveness of early N-acetylcysteine (NAC) administration in reducing mortality. Methods: This cross-sectional, prospective study was conducted at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Govt. Hospital, Tiruchirapalli, from December 2022 to December 2023. A total of 100 patients, aged over 12 years, who ingested rat killer paste containing yellow phosphorus, were included. Data on clinical manifestations, laboratory parameters, and outcomes were recorded. NAC was administered based on the time of ingestion, and outcomes were compared.
