    Abstract

With the aim of using Yoga as a part of lifestyle treatment for metabolic syndrome we conducted a study at "LLRM Medical College and SVBP hospital, Meerut" with the objective to study the effects of yoga in these patients on following parameters: 1) Hyper-triglyceridemia 2) Low HDL cholesterol 3) Fasting plasma glucose 4) Central obesity (assessed as waist circumference) 5) Hypertension. Methods and Materials: After clearance from Ethics committee, the study was conducted on patients attending Medicine/Endocrine OPD and admitted in Medicine/Endocrine ward at LLRM Medical College. It was an interventional study in which 100 patients who gave consent and were meeting the inclusion criteria were assessed in 2 groups of 50 (Study and Control group) thoroughly with proper clinical assessment and requisite investigations at regular intervals. Results: In our study we observed a reduction in waist circumference of 6.01% (p-value <0.0001), in systolic blood pressure (SBP) of 6.86% (p-value <0.0001), diastolic blood pressure (DBP)of 7.79% (p-value <0.001), serum triglyceride levels (TG) by 13.12% (p-value <0.0001) and fasting blood sugar (FBS) by 10.44% (p-value <0.0001) in patients of study group when compared to control group over a period of 6 months. We also observed an increase of 17.61% (p-value <0.0001)in the serum HDL cholesterol levels of study group. Conclusions: There was a statistically significant improvement in all parameters of metabolic syndrome in the individuals of study group when compared to control group at the end of 6 months. Therefore, we conclude that yoga can be a potentially useful, easy and relatively inexpensive tool for prevention and control of metabolic syndrome.
