    Abstract

    Diabetes mellitus is characterized by a state of chronic hyperglycemia due to defective production or action of insulin [1]. Diabetes is one of non-communicable diseases in India which has become a global health problem. 347 million people worldwide have diabetes. [2] And the recent world health organization reports that 62.4 million (19%) of the world diabetic population currently resides in India. This is set to increase to over 100 million by 2030[3]. The majority of the people with diabetes (90%) have Type 2 diabetes mellitus and predominantly affects older individuals in developed countries , in developing countries it affects the younger population in the prime of their working lives specially among the low socio economic status group and thus poses an even greater threat to the health of these individuals
