    Abstract

To find the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) patients. Material and Methods: One hundred eighty- NIDDM patients above 40 years of age of both genders were selected. Diabetic retinopathy was classified as mild non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), moderate NPDR, severe NPDR, high risk proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and PDR. Parameters such as duration of diabetes, family history, hypertension, Body Mass Index (BMI) etc. were recorded. The patients were subjected to random blood sugar estimation besides routine eye check-up which included direct ophthalmoscopy & 90D examination by an ophthalmologist. Results: Out of 180 NIDDM patients, 105 (58.3%) patients were males, and 75 (41.7%) patients were females. Mild NPDR was seen in 11 patients, moderate NPDR was seen in 5 patients, and severe NPDR and high risk PDR was seen in 2 patients each. There was no patient with PDR. The difference was significant (P< 0.05). In 12 of the 20 patients with DR, family history was positive. Duration of diabetes was 5-10 years in 2 patients, 10-15 years in 7 patients and >15 years in 11 patients. DR was present in 2 patients with BMI<24.9, 6 patients with BMI 25-29.9 and 12 patients with BMI >30. Hypertension was seen in 11 out of 20 patients with DR. Conclusion: higher no. of cases of DR was seen in patients with positive family history of diabetes, BMI >30, hypertension and with >15 years of diabetes. Prevalence of DR was found to be 11.11% among NIDDM patients in this study
