Abstract
Cirrhosis is the end-stage of different chronic liver diseases, which is a major cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. The majority of patients with cirrhosis are likely to develop oesophageal varices, with patients at risk of variceal bleeding. Thrombocytopenia is a common complication affecting cirrhotic patients which can be used to predict the presence of oesophageal varices. The present study was conducted to determine the correlation of thrombocytopenia with oesophageal varices grading in chronic liver disease patients as well as to determine if platelet count can predict the presence of oesophageal varices in a patient of cirrhosis of liver with portal hypertension.
