    Abstract

varicose vein are associated with various patho-physiological mechanisms commonest of them include venous hypertension, valve incompetence; changes in vein structure and eventually venous outflow obstruction or calf pump failure.Treatment of varicose veins is required for cosmetic as well as for symptoms associated with it. Hence this study has been carried out to compare the outcome of open surgical and endovascular procedures for management of varicose veins. Materials and Methodology: This is a prospective study conducted in tertiary care hospital on 200 patients who were observed with varicose veins of lower extremities. Prior consent was taken from all the patients and was randomly divided among various operative procedures. Follow up was done at 1 month, 3 months and 6 months respectively. Patient outcome and complication is recorded. Results: In this study we have concluded that in majority of the patients with varicose veins pain was the most common complaint (56%) followed by itching (32%), dilated vein (26%) and heaviness in lower extremities (18%). There were 14% patients who had swelling and ulcer followed by pigmentation (12%). Conclusion: Despite all the advances in management, open surgical management remain important in the treatment of varicose veins and is usually preferred over endo-venous procedures due to high rate of recurrence and high treatment cost associated with them.
