Abstract
In spinal anesthesia the local anaesthetic agent is injected into sub arachnoid space. The drug blocks the sodium channels in the nerve roots, thereby blocking the transmission. The loss of sympathetic function leads to undesirable physiological effects, for example hypotension particularly affecting elderly patients. Spinal anaesthesia can be administered in either the sitting or the lateral position, and each position has its own advantages and disadvantages
