Abstract

Centchroman, also known as Ormeloxifene, is a nonsteroidal selective estrogen receptor modulator that has been used as an oral contraceptive in India since the 1990s.Despite its efficacy and safety, there is limited research on its non- contraceptive benefits and comparison with other modern contraceptives. Aim: The aim of this study was to compare the contraceptive efficacy and safety of centchroman with other short-term modern contraceptives, and to explore its non- contraceptive benefits. Methodology: This was a review of existing literature on centchroman as a contraceptive and potential non-contraceptive benefits. The studies included randomized controlled trials and longitudinal studies conducted in India between 1991and 2020. Results: The review found that centchroman is a safe and effective contraceptive with comparable efficacy to other modern contraceptives. It also demonstrated potential non-contraceptive benefits such as anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and anti- osteoporotic effects. However, there is limited research on these benefits and further studies are needed to confirm their efficacy and safety [1]. Conclusion: Centchroman is a promising contraceptive with potential non-contraceptive benefits. However, further research is needed to fully understand its safety and efficacy, and to compare it with other modern contraceptives.
