    Abstract

Diabetes is recognised as a group of heterogeneous disorders with the common elements of hyperglycaemia and glucose intolerance. One of the most common microvascular complication associated with diabetes is diabetic nephropathy. Diabetic patients with microalbuminuria typically progress to proteinuria and overt diabetic nephropathy. An association of type 2 diabetes with carotid intima thickness and microalbuminuria has been postulated. Aim: To assess the association of Microalbuminuria with CIMT in Newly Diagnosed Patients of Type 2 Diabetes Patients. Material and Method: This is a case control study performed with sample size of 80 subjects with 40 type 2 DM cases and 40 healthy control. Results: Mean age of patients in group I was 49.55±5.61 years while in group II it was 49.73±5.51 years. Further in both the groups, majority of patients were females (55%). There were 45% males in both the groups. The microalbuminuria proportion was significantly higher in raised CIMT (>0.6) case group (p=0.001). Further raised FBS and metabolic syndrome too were significantly associated with raised CIMT (p<0.05), both showed higher proportion in raised CIMT group. Conclusion: The risk of microalbuminuria is higher in newly diagnosed cases of diabetes mellitus. A significant association was observed between microalbuminuria and raised CIMT. These findings thus indicated that newly diagnosed cases of diabetes should be evaluated for microalbuminuria and diabetic patients with microalbuminuria should be thoroughly followed up for the risk of cardiovascular events and a close vigil on glycaemic control should be maintained.
