Abstract
Background: The most common cause of newborn morbidity is prematurity, especially in very low birthweight (VLBW) infants. The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines very low birth weight neonates as those that weigh less than 1500g at birth, regardless of gestational age. Birth weight is the most important predictor of health problems during pregnancy, delivery and the newborn period.
