    Increased Chikungunya seropositivity with Dengue co-infection – Trend in recent years

    Abstract

    Dengue is endemic in Kolhapur district with annual recurrence. So hospital based retrospective study was carried out to determine positivity rate of dengue and chikungunya infection. Material and methods: Samples received were tested for Dengue IgM Antibody and Chikungunya IgM Antibody in Microbiology Laboratory, in a tertiary care hospital, Kolhapur tested by using MAC-ELISA kit. All samples were from in and around Kolhapur. Duration of study was from January 2021 to August 2022. Results and discussion: During January 2021 to August 2022 total 3285 samples tested for Dengue IgM Antibody and 1823 Samples tested for Chikungunya IgM Antibody. Dengue Antibody positivity was seen in 29.4% and Chikungunya positivity was 18.4%. There was no rise in Dengue positivity (29% in 2021 to 30% in 2022). While 17 samples in 2021 and 12 samples in 2022 were found to be positive for both Dengue and Chikungunya. Conclusion: Increase in Chikungunya positivity with Dengue co-infection is worrisome situation indicating need for urgent public health measures.
