Abstract
Background: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a significant contributor to pain and disability globally, with the efficacy and safety of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) and opioids in managing this condition are still being debated. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the effects of NSAIDs and opioids on knee pain reduction and functional improvement in knee OA patients. Methods: A randomised controlled trial was conducted at the Orthopedics Department of Varun Arjun Medical College & Rohilkhand Hospital, involving 80 knee OA patients aged 40-60 years. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups: Group I (n=40) receiving NSAIDs and Group II (n=40) subjects receiving opioids Pain intensity was assessed using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), and functional status was evaluated through the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) at baseline and bi-weekly intervals over three months. Adverse events were also monitored.
