    Prevalence of psychiatric disorders in patients with COPD in a tertiary healthcare setting

    Abstract

    Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a chronic disorder, having a major psychochological impact on person’s health. Individuals with COPD usually encounter acute exacerbations and multiple co-morbidities which contribute to difficulties in most daily activities, such as working, getting dressed and even walking. In our study, we aim to study prevalence of psychiatric disorders in patients with COPD. Materials and Methods: The following study was a hospital-based, cross-sectional study conducted from August 2022 to November 2022 at a tertiary care hospital (GMC Kathua) in the department of General Medicine. Total of 50 patients were included in the study. Diagnosis of COPD was made by Consultant Physician using clinical, biochemical, radiological and pulmonary function tests and Psychiatric morbidity was assessed using MINI (Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview). Results: Seven patients were having symptoms of Depression; ten patients were having symptoms of Anxiety Disorder, seven patients presented with symptoms of Alcohol use Disorder, one patient presented with symptoms of Cannabis use Disorder, two patients presented with symptoms of OCD and one patient presented with symptoms suggestive of BPAD. An association was seen between alcohol consumption and psychiatric morbidity. Conclusion: Patients with COPD have high psychiatric co-morbidity. Providing psychiatric care to patients with COPD will definitely improve socio-economic condition, decreased reliance on others and improved quality of life
