    Abstract

Despite fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) has a well recognized role in investigation neck masses, insufficient cellular yield in FNA remain an issue. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of FNAC as a primary investigation tool in neck masses. Methods: This is a prospective study of 83 cases with FNAC performed from 1st January 2022 till 31stDecember 2022 at Department of Pathology,GovtDistrict Hospital,Barmer. The result were compared with ultrasonography of neck masses. Results: In our study patients who presented with neck mass belonged to 21-30 year, followed by 11-20 years, followed by 31-40 years, followed by 31-40 year old patients with a male preponderance. USG findings signifies that 30 pts had infective pathology other than TB(tuberculosis), while 28pts had TB.20 had tumor. 5 patients had suspicious findings while FNAC findings states significantly difference from USG, which states that only 10 patients had TB while 18 had granulomatous inflammation. Only 8 patients had acute infection.4 had benign and 9 had malignant lesion and reactive lymphadenitis was seen in 25 patients. Conclusion: Thus despite lower tissue diagnostic yield compared to excision/incision biopsy, FNAC remains a safe, accurate and appropriate first line investigation of neck masses.
