    Abstract

Neck Hematoma after neck surgery is a potential life threatening complication. drainage after routine thyroid surgery remain controversial. the routine use of drain in many surgical procedure is no longer recommended. Aim and Objective: The aim of this study is to update the knowledge of the role of drain kept in thyroid bed after thyroid surgery is benefited in term of neck hemetoma complications and Hospital stay. Material and Method: A randomised prospective control study was conducted on 206 patients undergoing thyroid surgery. patients included in the study where divided into two groups in the basis of of using drain or not. post operative sonography Neck was done on first, third and seventh post operative day any unwanted events were noted. the data was analysed using two samples "t" test for calculating unequal variance. Result: Both group were evenly balanced according to age, sex and benign pathology of the tumor. there was significant difference in collection of Neck Hematoma at post operative site assessed by usg on D1, D3 and D7 in in the two group. Hospital stay was marked reduce in the non drain group. no patient in the either group had significant complications except post operative scar of drain is present in drain group. Conclusion: The present randomised study highlight that placement of drain after routine thyroid surgery may induce rather prevent fluid collection, has no influence on complication, lead to an extra scar and may increase Hospital stay,
