    Study of fournier’s gangrene cases and its management

    Abstract

    Fournier gangrene is fulminant necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum and genitalia. The objective of this study is to study the etiology and microbiology associated with fournier gangrene and to study the debridement and reconstructive procedures required in these patients. Methods: This was a prospective follow up study conducted from 2015-2017 at Government Medical College and Hospital Patiala, India. .Patients with clinical diagnosis of Fournier gangrene were included in the study. Results: A total of 30 patients were studied in the study period. The mean age of presentation in years is 52.46.The most common source of infection was perianal abcess. Diabetes mellitus was the most common co-morbid factor associated. The disease was polymicrobial and E. coli was the most common organism. All patients underwent debridement.Primary closure of scrotal skin was most common reconstructive procedure performed. Conclusion: In our study, the source of disease was perianal abscess and diabetes mellitus was the most important co-morbid condition. E. Coli and Staphylococcus was most commonly associated aerobic organism
