    Abstract

Study of the formation, distribution and communication of the medial nerve is crucial to know in the treatment and surgeries done in the post traumatic accidents such as the reconstruction and repair of the median nerve. Materials and Methods: Twenty eight upper limbs from the fourteen formalin - preserved cadavers were dissected and studied. Roots from the brachial plexus taking part in the formation of the median nerve, its relation with the axillary artery and communication with any other nerve were studied. Results: Three roots forming the median nerve were found in about 21.4% in left upper limbs and 28.6% in right upper limbs. In 7.1% of the upper limbs the median nerve was found running posterior to the axillary artery. Discussion: According to the study, the median nerve often develops from two roots. The roots for formation of the median nerve come from the lateral cord. The median nerve runs lateral to the axillary artery in its normal course. Study of the formation, distribution and communication of the medial nerve is helpful in avoiding the procedural and post-procedural complications
